The word cycle has its roots in Greek: cycl, which translates to “circle”. Karl von Drais invented the Laufmaschine or “running machine” in 1817 in Germany as an alternative to horses for plowing fields during a summer plagued by volcanic ash clouding the sun and leading to widespread famine, necessitating horse slaughter across Europe. Drais’ velocipede relied instead on riders pushing off of the ground with their feet instead of pedals in order to move forward; however, this proved inefficient, being difficult and even dangerous when out of control of its rider.

Pedal wheels were first added to velocipedes in the 1860s. Though no specific inventor can be pinpointed for coming up with this innovative solution, Pierre Lallement and Ernest Michaux, French carriage makers who had pioneered it are thought to have been among its creators; their vehicles became known as boneshakers because of their rough ride.

By 1870, Europeans had grown weary of bone-shaker bicycles. A revolutionary new style called the Penny Farthing was then developed. Featuring an enormous front wheel and small rear wheel resembling those seen on British coins (hence its name), this design greatly reduced unwieldiness and rider discomfort associated with its predecessor velocipede models.

As metal technology advanced, bicycle frames became lighter and more durable as metal was utilized to construct them. As metal became less expensive than wood for bicycle frames, its popularity rose. By 1912, James Starley invented a chain and sprocket system to allow cyclists to pedal directly against cranks on chainwheel. This allowed riders to travel at four to five times the speed of walking; his invention later came to be known as modern bikes or simply bikes.
